STYLE GUIDE

General Format
ArtSurvey use The Chicago Manual of Style, 17th ed. for general formatting and citations.
For spelling, please refer to Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, 11th Edition

TITLE
The title of the article, including subtitle, may be no longer than one hundred characters with spaces included.

TEXT
All text materials must be Microsoft Word files with language on English—US. Use 12-point Times New Roman font for all content with text aligned left. Double-space all components of the document: abstract, manuscript, block quotations, author’s biographical statement, notes, captions, and bibliography, etc. Notes muse be formatted as endnotes, not footnotes. All pages, including cover page, should be numbered in the upper right-hand corner of the page.

QUOTATIONS
Quotations must be accurate and carefully transcribed from its original location. Unless governed by fair use, authors must obtain permission to quote published material.

For consistence throughout ArtSurvey’s publications, please note;
An ellipsis (three spaced dots) indicates words dropped within a sentence. A period and three spaced dots indicate a deletion between sentences.

Brackets in quoted material indicate author’s addition to the text.

Italicized material indicates emphasis added to the text by author only.

Foreign-language quotations in both text and notes should be translated into English, unless the significance of the quotation will be lost in translation. The original text may be included in a note. The author will be responsible for proofreading non-English script passages for clarity and accuracy.

ENDNOTES
Endnotes should be consecutively numbered using Arabic numbers and should not use Roman Numerals or letters. Corresponding endnote numbers in the text should use superscript figures placed after punctuation.
All references to publications in notes should appear in full form only once. All subsequent entries from the same text should use a shortened form: surname of author, short title, and page reference. Do not use op. cit. or ibid.

IMAGES
When possible, image reproductions should be given in full color, even if image is in black and white. When compiling your images for submission, indicate the importance of each illustration, using abbreviations “S,” “M,” or “L”, to guide the relative size and prominence of each image in the layout design. If this distinction is not made, it will be made automatically during the publishing process.

IMAGE CAPTIONS
By each image, a full caption will appear with elements in the following order;

Artist Name: Do not give the artist’s birth-death dates or nationality in caption; this should be provided in the body of your text the first time their name is mentioned)
Title: Titles should be written in bold, and not italicized.
Date: In case of a "circa" date, the abbreviation "ca." shall be used. If a range of years is used to date an artwork use an en dash to separate the beginning and end years in that range. Use numerals for centuries, to save space, and use the abbreviations “BCE” or “CE” when dating ancient works. For works still in progress, use “–ongoing” to denote there is not yet an end date (ex. 2023-ongoing).
Medium: Capitalizing only the first work, completely spell out the medium/media used (ex. Oil on canvas, Watercolor over graphite on paper, etc).
Dimensions: Provide in inches or feet only – h x w x d in. All dimensions should be given as a fraction, do not use decimals. Use “dimensions variable” if dimensions vary.
Name of Collection and Other Collection Information: (if applicable); don’t include “The” before the name of any institution unless specified by institution. Include any other information specified by the collection credit line.
Copyright Information: (if applicable); provide the artwork copyright followed by either notice that the author is using the image through fair use, or the image copyright and/or image permissions credit.
